General Crime Prevention Tips
Citizens can help reduce crime by minimizing the “opportunity” for crime. Keep the following crime prevention tips in mind and you will greatly reduce criminal incidents at home and here in North Ogden.
- Call police immediately if you see or hear something suspicious. Report any crime or suspicion of a crime at once by calling dispatch at 629-8221. Dial 911 in an emergency or when a crime is in progress.
- An unlocked car is an open invitation to a car thief. Keep your vehicles locked at all times, and never leave a purse, wallet, cell phones, or other valuable items in the vehicle. Close all windows – professional thieves have tools that unlock cars through the smallest openings. Lock your car even if you’re making a quick stop at the gas station, convenience store, etc.
- Never attach a tag with your name and address to your key ring. If the keys are lost or stolen, the tag will lead the thief directly to your car and your home. If you have to leave your keys with a parking attendant or with a repair shop, leave only the ignition key.
- Keep your house doors locked and windows shut when not at home. Burglars try the doors and windows first. If burglars have difficulty with these, chances are they will move on to another property.
- If you suspect a burglary, don’t go in your home – the burglar may still be inside. Call police immediately. Don’t touch things like doorknobs etc. as this could jeopardize any fingerprints that may be left behind. Many citizens are reluctant to call police until they go inside to check things to see if their home was actually burglarized. If you see a screen that has been cut, a broken window, or a door that’s been left open, don’t go in. Call police from your cell phone or go to the neighbors to call.
- Get to know your neighbors. Watchful neighbors, who look out for you as well as themselves, are a front-line defense against crime.
